According to census records Elizabeth Sarah Courtenay Harris was born in 1817 in Exmouth, Devon. She married Daniel Francis Close 11 Dec. 1842; on this marriage certificate her father is listed as Edward Harris, a carpenter. The family history passed on by one of her granddaughters is that Elizabeth's father was a sea captain from Devon, England. (Did he later become a carpenter?) Her paternal grandfather, also a sea captain, married (?) a Miss Courtenay. Miss Courtenay was the daughter of the Earl of Devon.
