She married Daniel Francis Close 11 Dec. 1842; on this marriage certificate her father is listed as Edward Harris, a carpenter. The family history passed on by one of her granddaughters is that Elizabeth's father was a sea captain from Devon, England. (Did he later become a carpenter?) Her paternal grandfather, also a sea captain, married (?) a Miss Courtenay. Miss Courtenay was the daughter of the Earl of Devon. comments: This enquiry realates to the imposter Sir William Courtenay and the genuine William, who may or may not have been an MP in 1834. I live in the village where the 1838 Courtenay Rebellion took place and have a keen interest in local history. Among my Courtenay memorabilia is British Free Frank envelope front signed by William Courtenay, sent from London on July 25th 1834 and addressed to a Mr Howard of Killin, near Edinburgh. Free Franking was granted to Members of Parliament for letters sent on Parliamentary business. But I have failed to find a William Courtenay serving as an MP in 1834. There is a slight posibility that the signature is that of the imposter John Thom. He stood as MP for Canterbury in 1832 but was defeated. It seems unlikely that he would have been able to use a free frank two years later. Does anyone know of a William Courtenay who might have entitled to use Parliamentary privilege in 1834? comments: I'm looking for information on a William Courtenay born in London in

September, 1832. According to the 1900 US Federal Census, William Courtenay was born in England in September, 1832, the son of an English father and a Scottish mother. However, the 1880 Federal Census lists him as being born in 1834. William Courtenay came to the United States probably sometime around 1857. 1890 veterans records show that he served as a 1st Sergeant in Company H, Regiment 13 infantry in the US Civil War between August 1, 1864 and July 1, 1867. By the 1870s he was out in the Dakotas serving as an Indian Agent at Fort Berthold. In 1880, he married Fannie Patterson of New York City in Bismarck, North Dakota. By about 1884, the Courtenays moved to Miles City, Montana where they remained until William Courtenay's death in 1901. He was a real estate and insurance agent, as well as a cattle rancher. Does anyone have any information on who William Courtenay's parents were? Thanks!

Shield - divided into two halves by vertical line (impaled)

Husband's side (LHS) Courtenay shield with gold ground, 3 red roundels with the addition of 5-pointed star (mullet)in red. This latter may be a 'mark of cadency' implying the shield is that of the 3rd son of the current family head.

comments: I have reason to believe that my grandmother may have been a child of Laura Courtenay. Her name was Elsie Workman. She was born to a Laura Workman in Hitchin in 1898. I have noted from the 1901 census that Laura Georgina Workman then lived in Stevenage with Winifred. comments: I have the death certificate for my great-g-g-g grandfather Barnard Kilty, date of death 1855 Wigtownshire Scotland. His parents names on this certificate are, Father: Bryon Kilty Mother: Margaret Kilty nee Courtney. Place of birth for Barnard Ireland, unfortunately no county. Barnard would have been born around 1769, as the first marriage for this son of Bryon and Margaret is 1802 in Scotland.

I'm guessing they left Ireland after 1770, but as yet no proof of this as I am still searching for the rest of their children via www.scotlandspeople.gov. A long shot I know, but if there is any proof that a Margaret Courtney married a Kilty/Kelty/ (various spellings for this name) please get in touch, this would be much appreciated.

To put things in Context I am a direct male descendant of the first Earl of Cork Richard Boyle and Richards 6th son Viscount Francis Boyle. comments: Eleanor COURTENAY was the wife of James ANDERSON. Their daughter Jane/Janet ANDERSON married William McEWEN/McKEOWN at Sixmilecross, Tyrone, Ireland in 1857. By 1861 William and Jane McEwen were living in Ayrshire, Scotland, where they had 7 children. Their 3rd child, James, was born and baptised at Sixmilecross in 1866.

Jane McEwen nee Anderson died in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1899, and her parents are listed on her death certificate as James Anderson and Eleanor Courtenay. Her death was registered by her husband, William McEwen, and that both her parents were both deceased at the time of her death.

comments: My grandmother was Ann Jane Heatley nee Courtney born 1909 in Aghadalgon, Glenavy, Co Antrim, N.Ireland she died 2004, her father was Solomon Courtney 1867-1948, and his father was called Lewis Courtney who died at Aghadalgon on the 1st Sept 1889. He build the house and I think bought the farmland, still owned and farmed by the family called "Rivervale" on Chapel Hill in Glenavy. I know very little about Lewis, I think he was born c1845 but not sure where and was married to Elizabeth Kane. His will states his effects to be worth 121 and the farm was left to my greatgrandfather Solomon also known as Sammy.
I would love to know more of his origins or from anyone connected to this branch of the Courtney family

Your family tradition is interesting because fellow Courtenay Society Member Carolyn Grant tells us that her ancestor, Mary Anne Vane Courtenay (born 1785,) was the daughter of the 2nd Viscount and a Miss Vane. She was sailing to Quebec to marry a British Army officer when she was shipwrecked off the coast of Labrador. She later married there. Carolyn' s email is CRGrant@shaw.ca.

I don t know if my ancestor comes from a similar background. As our family tradition goes, my ancestor, Elizabeth Smith, was born in Edenbush, Scotland in 1805, the daughter of an Earl and a lady-in-waiting to the Queen of England before her marriage to Robert More of Glasgow. She was also said to have had a brother, William, who immigrated to the States, ran into trouble with the law, and was exiled.

I believe the tradition may be referring to Elizabeth s mother, Jean Courtenay, who married Thomas Smith. Their first child, Elizabeth, was born in 1805 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Traditional Scottish naming patterns say the first daughter is named after the mother s mother, presumably Elizabeth Courtenay, who may have been the daughter of an Earl. Several of the 2nd Viscount s sisters and nieces were ladies-in-waiting to the Queen or Princesses. The 3rd Viscount, also known as the 9th Earl, was named William, lived in New York City until he was imprisoned during the War of 1812, and was exiled to France. His sister, Elizabeth, who married Lord Somerset, eloped in Edinburgh, Scotland as did her parents, the 2nd Viscount and Viscountess. Perhaps Edenbush is a misspelling for Edinburgh?

I have no information about Jean Courtenay, when she was born, or who her parents were. I m guessing she was born around 1785. I also know nothing about Thomas Smith but did find a record stating that a T. Smith, esq. was the last surviving trustee of the 9th Earl. This may be referring to Thomas Assheton Smith, esquire, whose grandfather was Chancellor of the Exchequer under Queen Mary.

There was also a William Henry Courtenay born around 1788 of whom Prince William Henry later William IV acknowledged paternity. This was unusual and means the mother must have been a very powerful woman. William Henry Courtenay drowned while serving in the Royal Navy. I don t know if he and Jean were related.

William IV s older brother, George IV, was secretly married in 1785 to Maria Anne Smythe, widow of Mr. Fitzherbert. Their younger brother was also secretly married. Several Courtenay ladies were the mistresses of the Royal Princes in earlier generations because the Courtenays were closely related to the British and French Royal Families as well as the Emperors of Constantinople.

Although the 2nd Viscount did have a daughter, Lady Elizabeth Somerset, there was an Elizabeth Courtenay who was a sister of the 10th Earl. Her father, a cousin of the 2nd Viscount, was Chaplain to the Royal Family. His daughter, Elizabeth, never married. Her brother succeeded to the title upon the death of the 9th Earl in 1835.

My ancestor, Elizabeth Smith, her husband and children sailed for Canada in 1831, one month before William IV was crowned. They were sort of a mysterious couple who always seemed to be running from something. What that was, though, I have no idea and probably will never know.

P.S. Just as a matter of form, the 2nd Viscount Courtenay was never known as the 8th Earl as the title was granted retroactively after the death of his son, the 9th Earl.

An Egelina de Courtenay, a supposed daughter of Hugh de Courtenay, 3d Baron of Okehampton (died by 5 Mar 1292) and Alianora le Despenser, has been said to be the wife of Robert, Lord Scales (who died 20 Mar 1324/25). Positive evidence for this, however, appears so far lacking, and I hope that researchers here may be able to assist.

Egelina — in some sources called Evelina — is not to be confused with Aveline de Courtenay, a known daughter of Hugh and Alianora, who before 6 Nov 1311 married John, Lord Giffard of Brim(p)sfield, Gloucestershire, and who died as Giffard’s widow 27 Apr 1327.
According to Victoria County History (Herts, IV, 28) Robert, Lord Scales settles certain estates on his wife Egelina. Sources cited are Inq. a.q.d. file 116, no. 15, and Feudal Aids II, 439, but Egelina’s parentage or ‘surname’ not given. Complete Peerage (new ed.) XI, 501, queries the evidence for this marriage, citing without comment a note by Ethel Stokes claiming as authority "an account of the Courtenay family thought to have been compiled in the time of Edward III by a monk of Ford (Pole M., no. 3487, Exeter Transcript)".

I would be extremely grateful for any further information regarding Egelina/Evelina, the wife of Robert, Lord Scales — whether by closer reference to the Inq. a.q.d. or the Feudal Aids materials, or to the supposed record of the Courtenay family associated with Ford Abbey, or to any other source.

Failing this, I should particularly appreciate any word regarding the location of the Ethel Stokes comment, or indeed the nature and present whereabouts of the Courtenay/Pole manuscript or the Exeter transcription of it to which Stokes referred.

She was Lavinia Sally Anne HARFFY, born most probably in Canada in 1772 (daughter of Dr. William HARFFY).
Married in 1789 William GRAHAM (GRAHAM OF NETHERBY), captain in 65th regt of Foot, brother of Sir James GRAHAM, 1. baronet of Netherby. They lived in Marylebone. William GRAHAM died in 1792, leaving a son, Robert Charles GRAHAM. (Daughter Lavinia Frances must have died in infancy.) Robert Charles had a daughter Caroline Agnes GRAHAM, born 1813.
Lavinia returned to Canada (about 1794/96) and married Robert COOPER, Lieutenant Royal Engineers, who died Jan. 1799 in Quebec.
Daughter: Catherine Johanna Louisa COOPER, bapt. Arthuret, Cumberland, Sep 1799, m. in 1828 to the Hannoverian officer George Franz VON HASSELL.
In 1811 she married again (St. Anne, Soho, London): Francis DUBOURDIEU, of an Irish Huguenot family, Hanoverian Engineers, with whom she went to Hannover. She died in Oerel, Hannover, in 1853.

comments=My interest is in Robert Courtney, b. Abt 1752 in England; died 16 March 1840 in Ireland. Married Anna Wilson, she was born bet 1730-1767 in Scotland and died in Ireland.
Robert Courtney allegedly was sent by the King with a company of soliders (he was a Captain) to Ireland in 1785 to protect Protestants in Ireland. He met Anna there whose brother Dr Christopher Wilson was a Doctor in the same company as Robert. They married and remained in Ireland, they had five sons and two daughters. At least 2 sons went to America and 2 sons of another son came out to Australia.
Is this Robert related to the Courtenay family?
Is there anymore information regarding this Robert either in England or Ireland?

Can anyone out there confirm this? I do not know Elizabeth's parents name apart from De Courtenay and Longmaide. A De Courtenay castle was in this area - e.g., Colcomb, so it might tie up although the Courtenay family had dropped the "De" by this time. And I would say that Elizabeth was probably born out of wedlock because of the use of both parents' names.

comments=When I was a young soldier in the British Army during the Korean War in the early 1950s I was hospitalised for 3 months (late 1951) at the Royal Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot, England. During that time I became friendly with a young lady whose name -- alas -- I have since forgotten, but who was around my own age (I was born in 1932), who worked as a volunteer in the Hospital library, whose father was a General in the British Army, and who lived at Powderham Castle in Devon. I have no knowledge that she was a member of the Courtenay family, but if her father was indeed a GenerAL, it does seem likely.

In 1953 I was in the area and so called at Powederham Castle. I remember asking for her by name at the Lodge at the Castle gates, and being directed to the Castle itself, which means she must have been known to the people there. However, on my way up the drive a horse was sick all over me! The people at the lodge cleaned me up, but I was in no state to go calling at the Castle, so left, and have never since been in that locality.

I am curious, after all these years, as to what became of her in her later life, and wondered if through your website you could help? I have been in correspondence with the family at Powderham who cannot work out who she was, so you are my last resport.

If she was around 20 or so in 1951, her father would presumably have been around 40-50 or so, which means it is likely he was in the British Army during World War Two. Can anyone identify him?
