ancestor: My 7th great-grandmother, Frances Courtenay. ed John Norton and Sons, Merchants of London and Virginia. It used to be sold at the Library of Congress. Am interested to know the ancestry of the above named Frances Courtenay Tucker Nelson, and anything of interest.

comments: Frances Courtenay was born in England in 1682 but lived much of her life in Yorktown, Va. Her second husband was "Scotch" Tom Nelson, grandfather of the noted patriot. These people and others are covered in a ca. 1936 book by my grandmother, Frances Norton Mason, "John Norton and Sons, Merchants of London and Virginia," which used to be sold at the Library of Congress. Would like to know about her ancestry including any connections in the interesting online article by Brent Southgate. Am also interested in virtually any of her descendants. One such may have been a 1920s Arkansas author named Frances Courtenay Baylor whom I discovered online but about whom nothing is known except one book title.

comments : I have in my ancestry a woman named Elizabeth Courtenay Harris Close, the daughter of an Edward Harris and a Miss Courtenay. The references I have to Miss Courtenay say she is the daughter of the Earl of Devon and that she ran off with a sea captain (Edward Harris). Elizabeth Courtenay Harris Close was born in 1817 in England and died in 1885.

Any information that you might have would be helpful.

In most geneology books, there are two earls that are listed as having five and thirteen daughters.
I believe one of these may be the Miss Courtenay in my ancestry.
Thanks for your time. Pat McQueary

>comments : My great-great-great-grandfather James Courtenay married Nancy Agnes Kirkwood Jan.6,1821, Country Antrim Parrish,Donegore. They emmigrated to Upper Canada sometime between 1848 (the birth of their youngest child in Ireland) and Feb.1863 (the marriage of their only son, Israel, in Markham, Ontario). Israel was born in 1837, and he had four sisters. I am the great-grandaughter of Israel's daughter, Agnes Kirkwood Courtenay. I have the complete family history after their arrival in Upper Canada, but nothing much about the Irish connection. Were the original Courtenays Huegenots?
