ancestor=Sir William Courtenay, 8th Earl of Devon, 1762-1785
comments=Sir William Courtanay, 8th Earl of Devon, had 13 daughters, most of whose marriage history is known. My great grandparents and their descendants claimed that my great great grandfather, Dennis Sullivan (b. 1785, d. 1858) was the result of a liason between a Captain Sullivan serving in the British Army, and one of the daughters. Eleanor was b. 1772, but died young in 1789, unmarried. Elizabeth (1765-1815) married Lord Somerset and was said to have had words with her father around the time of her wedding before he was sent to South Africa as governor of the Cape Colony in 1808. Anything relevant?

John Courtenay of Boconnoc (John of Bottreaux, Botreaux)

electricbluestar@hotmail.co.uk
ancestor=John Courtenay of Boconnoc
comments=I am working on a possible theory that John Courtenay of Boconnoc (John of Bottreaux, Botreaux) may have been John Wilton from Lanreath
All dates are circa due to lack of records but:
John Wilton born 1450, married 1479 Died 1504, married to Joan,
John Courtenay, born 1452, married 1481, died 1509 married to Johane
Lanreath and Boconnoc are only a few miles apart and the Bottreaux family had links to Lanreath. The Courtenays married into the Wilton family. John Wilton, b 1607 married Mary Burell, Margaret Trethurffe's Gr Grandaughter. Elinor (Eleanor) Wilton married William Paynter, whose Mother was Alice Courtenay. William Wilton, John's Gr Grandson married a D'Auney. The early Wilton's paid taxes. The slightly rare names Lawrence & Nicholas occur in both families. John Courtenay's siblings were born in Boconnoc (Florence, Isabelle, Elizabeth & Matilda. I am interested in anything that can be added or discounted by anyone, however small.

16 May 2016 - update:
Also, I have William Courtenay born 1695 married to Grace Bice.
Have you got any information regarding their ancestors, possible back to Edward Courtenay and Elizabeth Gorge? I have suggestions but not proof?

comments=Well, my 4th great grandmother was Elizabeth Sarah Courtenay Harris born in St. Giles, Oxfordshire. Her father was Edward Harris and many sources say that her mother is Louisa Augusta Courtenay but it can't be possible because it is speculation and she was married to Sir ? (can't remember) but I think Edward Harris's mother was a Courtenay, it is most likely.

CORRECTION: Actually Elizabeth Sarah Courtenay Harris was born in Exmouth, Devon, England in 1817. She married Daniel Francis Close (an independent minister) and I know she is a descendant of the Courtenay families. I just don't know how.

comments=Hi,
I am trying to compile the Courtney family tree for my father for Christmas. I am about to start by getting birth and marriage certificates in Dublin for my father and his parents.
I already know my father's grandfather is a Robert Edward Courtney who was born around 1872, and it is believed he was born in Omagh in Ireland. But he emigrated to Canada and is believed to have died in Moose Jaw (Saskatchewan). I would like to know if anyone has any information about Robert Edward or if anyone has any suggestions as to how to find this out?
It would be much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Louise

Leonard Walter de Courtenay, born about 1831

address2=

state=Germany

zip=51503

ancestor=Again: Leonard Walter de Courtenay, born abt 1831
comments=Birth year calculated because of confirmation in 1845. Photograph by Abdullah Freres, Constantinoples, may have been taken during world exposition in Paris, 1867, looks like man in his thirties, too.
He was a relative to my ancestress Lavinia Sally Anne DUBOURDIEU in Stade, Hannover, Germany. She mentioned him in her last will and testament, and he was obviously very close to her. But I still don't know just how they were related. He might have been her grandson or even great-grandson ...
She was Lavinia Sally Anne HARFFY, born most probably in Canada in 1772 (daughter of Dr. William HARFFY).
Married in 1789 William GRAHAM (GRAHAM OF NETHERBY), captain in 65th regt of Foot, brother of Sir James GRAHAM, 1. baronet of Netherby. They lived in Marylebone. William GRAHAM died in 1792, leaving a son, Robert Charles GRAHAM. (Daughter Lavinia Frances must have died in infancy.) Robert Charles had a daughter Caroline Agnes GRAHAM, born 1813.
Lavinia returned to Canada (about 1794/96) and married Robert COOPER, Lieutenant Royal Engineers, who died Jan. 1799 in Quebec.
Daughter: Catherine Johanna Louisa COOPER, bapt. Arthuret, Cumberland, Sep 1799, m. in 1828 to the Hannoverian officer George Franz VON HASSELL.
In 1811 she married again (St. Anne, Soho, London): Francis DUBOURDIEU, of an Irish Huguenot family, Hanoverian Engineers, with whom she went to Hannover. She died in Oerel, Hannover, in 1853.
Any help will be much appreciated.
