Dear The Courtenay Society
We
have been researching my husband's Courtenay family history for the
last three years (please see below the results of our research).
The reason we are contacting The Courtenay Society is that when Horace
died in 1959 the family’s solicitor was unable to find Horace’s birth
certificate or birth family. When Horace’s
wife Adelaide died in 1987 the family was told by Horace’s nephew Roland that
he had some important news to share with the family - that Horace had asked Roland
to tell the family when Horace and Adelaide had died – that Horace’s father was
‘an illustrious member of the aristocracy, a person of considerable note.’
As
you can see from the research below it would appear that people have
gone to some considerable lengths to disguise Horace's true father.
We would appreciate any help you could give us in further researching and finding Horace's true birth father.
Regards
Peter and Lorraine

ROBERT THRASHER BORN C1826
SOUTHAMPTON
The only
record we have been able to find in the 1841 census for a Robert Thrasher is a
domestic servant who is not living with his birth family. Unfortunately,
it is possible that Robert's baptism records were destroyed during World War
Two when there was severe bombing of the Southampton area and churches along
with their associated records, as we have not been able to trace a Robert
Thrasher.
Robert
disappears from the 1851 census and 1861 census. Robert's wife-to-be
Priscilla May Pope born 1840 Hartest, Suffolk also disappears on the 1861
census. We know that Robert and Priscilla's daughters (and their
husbands) later become involved with the theatre in late Victorian/early
Edwardian times and it may be that both Robert and Priscilla themselves were
involved with the theatre and were either performing and so missed being
recorded on these censuses, had other unknown theatrical names, or were working
abroad as we can also find no trace of their wedding registration. Robert
could have been a soldier, sailor or merchant working abroad as his occupations
recorded on his daughters' birth certificates and wedding certificates are
secretary, private secretary (theatre private secretary?), process server,
solicitor's clerk and messenger. Robert was a relatively older 'first-time'
father when daughter Eliza was born in 1868 London. Did Robert have a
previous wife who died or who he separated from either in England or abroad,
leaving behind any other children from a previous marriage or did Robert and
Priscilla leave children behind in another country?
Robert is
found in the 1871 census with his wife Priscilla and their daughter Eliza
working as a messenger.
Robert dies
in 1879 and is described as a fireman. After contacting the London Fire
Brigade who had no records for Robert they suggested that he worked for a
private company and with Robert's daughters' association to the theatre was
most likely a theatre fireman dying at The Charing Cross Hospital, The Strand
in the heart of London theatre-land.
Soldiers
returning from abroad and those with the legal professions are both known to
have altered their occupations to working in the theatre.
Threshers
the Wine Merchants originated from Southampton in Victorian times.
Documentary evidence found below.
ROBERT THRASHER - WIFE
PRISCILLA MAY THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS PRISCILLA TORPLOW,
PRISCILLA JEZARD)
After
Robert dies, Priscilla is left with four young daughters to care for and is
found in the 1881 census working as a domestic cook. In the 1891
census Priscilla and her daughters are known as Torplow and working as
dressmakers. Is this how the family became involved with the theatre by
making theatrical costumes or from daughter Alice working at the coffee house
(from where music hall originated in the taverns and coffee houses).
Priscilla's daughter Eliza had a (illegitimate?) daughter Violet Alice
Louise Jezard in 1890 Kensington who is not found living with the family or
with her 'husband' Alfred in the 1891 census. Priscilla's daughter Alice
had an illegitimate son Horace Thrasher/Horace Courtenay in 1893 rumoured to be
the child of aristocrat and again Priscilla alters her name to Priscilla Jezard
by the 1894 London electoral registration. When Priscilla dies in 1900 she is
known as the widow of John Jezard but no marriage registration can be found or
any other records for John Jezard or her daughter-in-law Ellen Jezard who was
present at Priscilla's death at 133 Finborough Road.
When
Priscilla's grandchildren Violet Alice Louise Jezard and Horace Thrasher/Horace
Courtenay are baptised in 1896 they are shown as living at 133 Finborough Road.
Was Priscilla taking care of the children while her daughters worked, as
after Priscilla's death in 1900, both Violet and Horace are found in a boarding
school in Southend. Ruth marries in 1900, Alice in 1901 and Louisa in
1905 - it is not known what happened to Eliza after 1891.
Documentary evidence found below.
ROBERT THRASHER - DAUGHTER
ELIZA PRISCILLA THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS ELIZA JEZARD AND ELIZA
TORPLOW)
Robert and
Priscilla have their daughter Eliza Priscilla Thrasher in 1868 London.
Eliza has a
daughter Violet Alice Louise Jezard (named after her sisters Alice and Louisa)
in 1890 Kensington at 109 Finborough Road (Sacillia Lovell is on the 1890
London Electoral Register for this property) - and here is where the mystery
begins. Eliza records on Violet's birth registration that her maiden name
is Eliza Thrasher and her 'married' name is Eliza Jezard - but no marriage
registration can be found for Eliza Thrasher and 'husband' Alfred Jezard.
Is Alfred Jezard, Alfred Pope found on the 1881 census and 'brother' to
Priscilla as no other records can be found for this Alfred Pope.
Violet and
Alfred are not found on the 1891 census at all - but Eliza is found living with
her mother and sisters named as Torplow.
Violet is
baptised with her illegitimate cousin Horace Thrasher/Horace Courtenay in 1896
outside of the parish and both children were baptised with 'false' baptism
parents. Violet's parents are recorded as George Jezard a P&O Steward
and May Jezard (could this be Priscilla May Jezard) of whom no records can be
found with the family living at 133 Finborough Road.
Eliza then
disappears from the 1901 census and 1911 census. Violet is found boarding
with her illegitimate cousin Horace Thrasher/Horace Courtenay in a girls
boarding school in Southend in the 1901 census but Violet also disappears in
the 1911 census. Did Eliza and Violet alter their names yet again or
emigrate to Canada or America (or Australia) where their sister Ruth was known
to travel for her theatrical work during the Golden Age Of British Theatre
1880-1920 and when mass emigration from Britain and Ireland was taking place
for a better life before the start of the First World War.
Documentary evidence found below.
ROBERT THRASHER - DAUGHTER
ALICE MAUD MARY THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS GRACE THRASHER AND
GRACE COURTENAY)
Robert and
Priscilla have their daughter Alice Maud Mary Thrasher in 1871 London.
Alice is
found working in a coffee house in the 1891 census which could be how her
family become involved with the theatre, as taverns and coffee houses provided
entertainment that evolved into music hall and comedy.
Alice had
an illegitimate son Horace Thrasher/Horace Courtenay in 1893 Earls Court at 81
Archel Road, rumoured to be the son of an aristocrat. On Horace's birth
registration, Alice records her married name as Grace Thrasher, formerly Grace
Courtenay and uses her father's name Robert Thrasher as her 'husband' Robert
Thrasher. Illegitimate births at this time was only 4% but men and women
would live as common-law husband and wives before getting married or have two
or three children before becoming husband and wife - so why the need for this
cover-up with both Violet's birth and Horace's birth - particularly during this
period known as the Naughty Nineties due to the laxity of sexual morals!
Horace is
baptised as Horace Thresher with his illegitimate cousin Violet Alice Louise
Jezard outside of their parish in 1896 (which was unusual as illegitimate
children would need to be baptised within their parish should parish relief be
needed) and both children were baptised with 'false' baptism parents - Horace's
parents are recorded as Percy Thresher and Louisa Thresher who are in fact his
aunt Louisa Thrasher and uncle-to-be Percy Atkins with the family living at 133
Finborough Road.
Alice is
found in a boarding house of an ex-actress in the 1901 census living on own
means. Ex-actresses would provide boarding for theatrical people,
particularly to protect the reputation of young actresses. Horace is
found at a girls boarding school in Southend with Violet. Horace, Violet
and their mothers are not in the workhouse or farmed off as nurse children and
no bastardy records or bastardy financial arrangements have been found
either in court records or church records. It seems a one-off maintenance
payment or ongoing maintenance payments have been given to Alice and Eliza for
their own and their children's upkeep. Any of the father’s family
financial records could either be destroyed or hidden – or the payments further
hidden by being paid to a third party. It
is unusual for a boy to be sent to a girls boarding school, Westcliff College
For Girls and could have been a theatrical school as those attending the school
have been found performing drama or musical shows in later years. Agnes
Shepherd who ran the school could have been a friend of the family and the
school chosen to keep the children away from their birth place in London, or to
be close to their parents working on the theatrical circuit or to be close by
when returning from abroad as Southend was a busy port.
ROBERT THRASHER - DAUGHTER
ALICE MAUD MARY THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS GRACE THRASHER AND GRACE COURTENAY)
In The
London Gazette, March 3, 1900 George Samuel Solomon and Rachel Solomon trading
as S Solomon are shown to be bankrupt – they are show card manufacturers –
Alice marries Herbert Solomon the following year, is this how they met with the
theatrical connection and show card connection?
Alice
marries in 1901 to Herbert Solomon, who is from a rich, influential Jewish
family. Sadly the Solomon family do not approve of the marriage,
Herbert's father is dead but Herbert's mother does not attend the wedding and
the couple are ostracised from the family. Alice states that Robert
Courtenay deceased is her father. Herbert serves in the Boer War soon
after getting married and returns home to Alice.
Alice is
found living with her husband, son and sister Ruth's son Edward Leslie Court in
the 1911 census. We have been able to trace Edward's father in the 1911 census
but not his mother Ruth. It may be that Ruth took part in the suffragette
1911 census boycott, which was particularly supported by those working in theatrical
roles or may have been working in a show or away abroad, leaving Edward to be
cared for by his aunt.
Horace
attended Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith from 1906 to 1910 and his 'father'
is shown as Solomon H L Courtenay, a combination of his father's name and
step-father's name.
By 1911
Herbert and Horace both work as clerks for the London Stock Exchange, together
with Herbert's brother-in-law Percy Atkins, who has found his previous role of
theatrical business manager altering into a less profitable occupation.
Horace
serves in World War One alongside other volunteers and returns home, his health
never the same again.
When Horace
marries in 1924 he states on his marriage registration that H Courtenay clerk
deceased is his father.
Horace
later works for the civil service in the Ministry Of Transport and moves from
London to Blackpool during World War Two to escape the heavy London bombings so
that civil service work could continue uninterrupted and was responsible for
coastal lighthouses during the war - and this is where Alice dies not long
after their move to Lancashire.
When Horace
died in 1959 the family’s solicitor was unable to find Horace’s birth
certificate or birth family.
ROBERT THRASHER - DAUGHTER
ALICE MAUD MARY THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS GRACE THRASHER AND GRACE COURTENAY)
The family
has a silver bowl in the shape of a flower made by silversmiths Walker &
Hall W&H with The Globe Club engraved on the base – is this a theatrical
club?
Documentary evidence found below.
ROBERT THRASHER -
DAUGHTER
LOUISA THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS LOUISA TORPLOW AND LOUISA
THRESHER)
Robert and
Priscilla have their daughter Louisa Thrasher in 1874 London.
In the 1881
census Louisa is sent away to boarding school. One can only imagine what
skills were being taught there (no record of the school survives, were
theatrical skills being taught there and that is how the family became involved
with the theatre) and why Louisa as the third child was sent there (although
perhaps her older sisters had been sent before the 1881 census). How
could a widow now working as a domestic cook with four young daughters be able
to send their child away to a boarding school.
Louisa's
sister Alice had an illegitimate son in 1893 and acts as false mother to her
nephew Horace Thrasher/Horace Courtenay at his baptism in 1896 together with
her husband-to-be Percy Atkins, recording themselves as Louisa Thresher and
Percy Thresher for their 'son' Horace Thresher.
Louisa is
found living as a servant in the 1901 census at Dorset Mansions, Fulham, the
same street where her sister Ruth and husband Edward Albert Court are also
living.
Louisa
marries Percy Atkins in 1905 (Percy is working in the box office at The Lyceum
Theatre, London after being a theatrical business manager). Percy’s
father was a newspaper correspondent, so there may have been some connection to
Arthur Collins’s brother Horace Collins who was press agent for The Royal Drury
Lane Theatre later becoming Secretary of the Theatrical Managers Association.
For some
unknown reason Percy uses Percy Atkins for the 1911 census and Percy Thresher
for the 1911 London electoral register (and continues to use Percy Thresher for
the London Electoral Registers). By the
1911 census the role of theatrical business manager had altered so much that
Percy worked as a stock exchange clerk at the London Stock Exchange with his
brother-in-law Herbert Solomon and nephew Horace Courtenay. Although technically correct when Percy and
Louisa state on the 1911 census that no children have been born of their
marriage (they married in 1905 and their ‘son’ Horace Thresher was baptised in
1896), their ‘son’ Horace Thresher is not on the 1911 census or found elsewhere
on the 1911 census – baby Horace who was baptised as Horace Thresher in 1896,
birth registered as Horace Thrasher in 1893 is now known as Horace Courtenay.
Sadly
Louisa dies relatively young and Percy remarries to Jessie Ann Elton in 1924.
Documentary evidence found below.
ROBERT THRASHER - DAUGHTER
RUTH THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS RUTH TORPLOW, RUTH
JEZARD AND RUBY JEZARD)
Robert and
Priscilla have their daughter Ruth Thrasher in 1879 London.
Sadly
Robert dies in June several weeks Ruth's birth in August.
In 1897
Ruth is found travelling to America with a group of theatricals, including
Jessie Almer who was recently researched in a Who Do You Think You Are programme.
Ruth is
found performing at The Royal Drury Lane Theatre in 1898 in the lavish
pantomime The Forty Thieves and again in 1899 in the extravagant pantomime Jack
& The Beanstalk with Ellen Terry actress (a local resident) in the
audience. Ruth performed in the
pantomimes with Dan Leno (Edward VII’s court jester), Herbert Campbell and
Whimsical Walker (Ruth is mentioned in his memoirs) who performed for Queen
Victoria at Windsor Castle, while Arthur Collins was stage manager. These theatrical characters were either born
or lived in the same area of London as Ruth’s family at the same time – perhaps
they knew one another and that is how the family became involved with
theatre? Perhaps Ruth and her family
attended aristocratic and royal soirees with her theatrical colleagues and that
is how Alice and Eliza had their illegitimate children.
When Ruth
and Albert Edward Court marry in 1900 Albert is a private secretary (theatre
private secretary, The Empress Theatre is in Lillie Road nearby?) and their
wedding witnesses are Arthur Brooks comedian, Albert Kingsley artist,
along with Mrs Ellen Seymour (could Ellen Seymour also be Ellen Jezard).
On their wedding registration Ruth records her father as Robert Jezard -
a combination of her father Robert Thrasher and 'step-father' John Jezard.
When Ruth
and Albert have their son Edward Leslie Court in 1905, Albert is Chief Of Staff
at the London Coliseum.
ROBERT THRASHER - DAUGHTER
RUTH THRASHER
(ALSO KNOWN AS RUTH TORPLOW, RUTH
JEZARD AND RUBY JEZARD)
Ruth is not
found on the 1911 census but could either have been working in the theatre that
evening, working abroad or as the suffragette movement had planned a boycott of
the 1911 census and theatrical people supported the suffragette movement,
taking part in any number of demonstrations or staying out purposely as a form
of civil disobedience. Actresses would perform suffrage plays (performed
from 1907-1914) that lead to the formation of Actresses’ Franchise League
in 1908. As attending a play was a wide-reaching social event,
Suffragists used their plays to alter social attitudes as their message through
a theatrical play could reach a large section of the community in a very short
time.
Ruth's
husband Albert Edward Court was a rink manager in the 1911 census, which was a
hugely popular pastime for late Victorians and Edwardians and into the early
20th century, with musicians playing alongside the roller-skaters to provide
more entertainment. We know that Albert
was working at Brook Green Skating Rink in 1914.
Ruth is
found performing in the Diving Belles at the San Fransisco Casino in 1917.
Ruth's family had lived in the Earls Court, Fulham, Kensington, London
area close to Olympia where Barnum's Circus had performed and then Ruth later
performed at The Royal Drury Lane Theatre - both The Royal Drury Lane Theatre
and Barnum's Circus were known to have given spectacular water-based
performances. Water ballet was also being performed by the end of the
19th century which then evolved into early 20th century synchronised swimming -
so we would love to think that Ruth ran away with the circus or was influenced
by them when they first came to town!
Edward
Leslie Court's father Albert Edward Court died in 1924 and Edward emigrated to
Canada in 1926 to be a farmer. We are currently asking Canadian Family
History Societies for help with locating Edward's records.
