Hi,

I have been looking ever so long for information on my family. If someone can help I'd be forever greatful. My great-grandmother Phoebe Jan Garvey Ahner was born in Tyne and Wear of Irish Catholic Parents. She was baptized at St. Mary's in Newcastle Tyne and Wear. Her parents were Patrick and Mary Garvey. Mary was born around sometime in the 1830s apparently in Ireland. Her parents were John Rowland or Roland and Mary Jane de Courtney in Ireland. I have been unable to get them out of England and back to Ireland. Mary Garvey and her children emigrated in 1873 to New York and went directly to Ontario.

Patrick Garvey is a common name it appears. De Courtney or any spelling, is not so it seems. I don't even know what area to begin my search. Any info of my de Courtney's would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to find out the Courtenay connection to my mother's family.

My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Alexander Courtenay who married Thomas Hunter at Kilrea First Presbyterian Church on the 12 February 1838. According to the church records Elizabeth was the daughter of Sarah Church and William(?) Courtenay possibly of Templemore. She is recorded in the Church register as being a member of the Church of England.

She had 2 brothers Thomas (born about 1810) and John.

Thomas was a doctor at Galgorm, Co Antrim having graduated from Glasgow University in the 1840s.

Thomas died in 19th November 1893. Elizabeth died 17th February 1894, aged 80. John survived both siblings.

Elizabeth's son John Chaine Hunter was my great grandfather.

Having never heard the Courtenay name in connection with the Hunter family it would be interesting to find out where this branch of the family came from.

In one of the Courtenay family trees in the 198 page version of the Crossle manuscript, on page 165, John Courtenay, third son of John Courtenay (d.1812) and Sarah Clibborn, is shown as marrying Mary, daughter of James Hogg of Redford. It further states that John junior was first of Waterford and afterwards of Grange, Clansfield, Co. Tyrone. John died in 1851 having had a son James Courtenay (1809-1878).

I can find no evidence of the marriage of John and Mary Hogg; where their son, James, was born; or information that points to John’s residence at Grange. Indeed I have not been able to place Grange, Clansfield, Co. Tyrone.

I do have John Courtenay born in 1775 and alive and a widower at the time of the 1851 census. (Presumably he could have died later that year, but where?) I have details of the James mentioned above, and a further two sons: John (born 1808), William James (born about 1814); and two daughters born in 1815 and 1817.

I would like to communicate with anyone who can throw more light on where the sons were born, where their parents were married, and where they died.

Apart from this one area, I have the family well documented in Waterford and England.

I am trying to trace my family tree on my maternal grandmother Margery Catherine Little's maternal side- Elsie Elphinstone Bird (Little)- Catherine Isabella Elphinstone (Bird) ( and have traced back to the 1700s and early 1800s to my great, great ,great grandmother was Matilda Courtenay Clack in the 1810 census she was 10 years old she lived at Hampstead in Devon.  She was the daughter of Anne Naylor and Thomas Clack.

I always wondered why her middle name was Courtenay and I knew there was a Frances Clack married to William Courtenay the 8th earl of Devon but I can't work out the connection to Matilda or Thomas Clack. I wondered if Frances Clack was her aunt or whether William Courtenay had a sister who married into the Clack family.  As I thought Courtenay may have been passed as a family maiden name to a  middle name for Matilda.

I also see that one of the 14 daughters of William and Frances was a Matilda jane Courtenay I thought it was an unusual name at that time in England so thought there may be a connection to my family tree.  

Also someone in my family has told me there is some connection between the Courtenays and to the Elphinstones in Scotland who I'm also descended from but I'm not sure if that's true if there is any connection to them or not.

Lastly I know the original 1st Earl of Devon William Courtenay was closely related to the royal family a first cousin to Henry the VII and married princess Catherine of York but then the earldom got passed onto distant relatives after Edward Courtenay there was no succession.  Can you tell me exactly how it got passed on to William Courtenay the 8th earl as it's not very clear between the 1550s-1700s. I read he was a great-great-great grandson of Sir Phillip and was unsure who he was.

Courtenay School, (modern building 1955), Charleston, South Carolina

The original Courtenay School (upper Meeting Street, Ward 7) was erected in 1888 and dedicated on Feb. 4, 1889.  The school was named after Charleston Mayor William Ashmead Courtenay (Mayor of Charleston SC, 1879-1887).

The modern (1955) Courtenay Elementary School became the home of Charleston Progressive Academy in 2006. After spending millions in renovations, the campus was ordered to be vacated and gutted in 2010.
